PHOTOGRAPHS----SCULPTURAL TIME CAPSULE:

When beginning the discussion of a time capsule to be placed in the new addition to the Milliken Fine Art Building, I reviewed the criteria and immediately challenged the status-quo by asking:

Why does a time capsule have to be in a cornerstone?
Why does a cornerstone have to look like a grave marker
?
Why can't a time capsule be incorporated into a piece of sculpture?

I began developing the concept for a stainless steel wall relief to be placed on the exterior brick of the new addition. This sculpture would house a twelve-inch diameter cylinder, which would penetrate the wall and be visible from the inside. The inside end of the cylinder would have a twelve-inch diameter photo etching of the current faculty along with dates and instructions for opening the capsule. This etching could also be printed in a limited edition once the capsule is opened.
